Usito: the online Quebec dictionary
Developed by UdeS researchers, Usito is the first-ever electronic dictionary to describe the standard French in use in Quebec while also making links with the rest of the Francophonie community.
Free for all users!
Université de Sherbrooke has made this valuable dictionary available to you for free since 2019. It extensively inventories Quebec, Canadian and North American usage in all areas of everyday and professional life, in addition to showcasing our cultural heritage.
Easy to use and continually evolving
Usito is continuously enriched by modern developments and by your needs. The dictionary features a powerful, user-friendly and intuitive search engine.
Higher education at your service
Usito was envisioned, designed and created by a research team called Franqus at Université de Sherbrooke.
The colossal project required more than 15 years of work and the input of some 60 contributors (editors, revisers, consultants and computer specialists).
At the helm of the research group, professors Hélène Cajolet-Laganière, Pierre Martel (editorial co-directors) and Chantal-Édith Masson (IT director) wanted to fill a need by providing the Quebec community with a lexicographic tool better suited to its linguistic and cultural context. Today, they are delighted to see their work become a permanent resource accessible to all users!
